The site of the former Squirrel Hill Theater on Forward Avenue has been an eyesore ever since it closed in 2010. Despite intense interest by the community for redevelopment of the site, a viable plan that balances the goals of the community with economic viability, has not moved forward – until now. The Flats on Forward involves a partnership of ACTION-Housing, Inc. and Kobol, two private developers who are already owners of adjacent real estate in this block. We were successful in creating a mixed‐use development that blends 43 units of affordable housing with ground floor office space, celebrating this gateway to the Squirrel Hill community while housing vulnerable people and catalyzing development in a well‐located commercial area.
